Carbohydrates affect mood and behaviour in human and a meal rich in carbohydrates triggers insulin release in the body.  This Insulin allocates blood sugar into cells and this sugar can be used for energy and for effective entry of tryptophan into the brain. This tryptophan affects the neurotransmitters levels in the brain. Thus diets low in carbohydrate can trigger depression since the production of brain serotonin and tryptophan relies on carbohydrate-rich foods and the release of these neurotransmitters promote the feeling of well-being.

Also, food that are more slowly digested, absorbed and metabolised and that causes lower and slower rise in blood glucose known as low glycemic index foods (some fruits and vegetables, whole grains, pasta) produces a moderate but lasting effect on our brain energy level, chemistry,  and mood  than the food that are more fastly digested, absorbed and metabolised and that causes higher and faster rise in blood glucose known as high glycemic index – primarily sweets. The high glycemic index food provides immediate but temporary relief. Protein and amino acids intake can affect the brain functioning and mental health in general and a good protein diet containing all essential amino acids are a perfect nutritional treatment for mental health. Food such as dairy products, meats, eggs, beans, peas, and grains may be prescribed for treatment. Many of the neurotransmitters which act in the brain have their building block as amino acids, for example, dopamine is made from tyrosine whilst serotonin is made from the tryptophan, thus the amino acid is very important in mental health and physiology. Thus if you feel a little bit down, anxious, depressed, have a protein bar or protein shake, it might go a long way to boost your mood.
