The APHRC international postdoc fellowship is provided by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). The African Population and Health Research Center is a not for profit, a non-governmental institute with goals in achieving high-quality research relevant to the great policy of the centre.
About the APHRC international postdoc fellowship
The institute focuses on health, population, development issues and education regarding sub-Saharan African. Thus the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) seek outstanding post-doc fellow to start research in the area of Aging and Development Program. The postdoctoral candidate and recipient of the fellowship will lead on all aspects of an in-depth qualitative research and investigation regarding experiences and impacts of the set of programs such as Kenya’s older persons cash transfer program. The recipient will also be responsible for scientific writing and reports to present the result of the research and qualitative investigation. Moreover, recipients will be responsible for designing research activities related to the program. The recipient will also be responsible for writing proposals for the ageing program.
Selection criteria for the APHRC international postdoc fellowship.
Applicants are expected to have a PhD specifically in the area of Social Gerontology or other closely related fields. Applicant must not have more than two years of postdoctoral experience. Also, applicants must have strong communication and interpersonal skills including writing, and organisational skills. A high record of publications is a plus for the success of the application especially in the area of interest. Applicants with experience or strong interest in the areas of ageing, intergenerational relationships and social protection are encouraged to apply. Applicants must also have strong qualitative research skills including management of data, the collection of data, interpretation of data and ability to report data concisely and understandably. Computer literacy in Microsoft packages including the Word, PowerPoint and Excel is a must for the position. Applicants with experience in empirical research with older persons will have upper hand in the recruitment process. The centre will prioritise application from applicants from sub-Saharan African countries.
Desirable selection criteria
Moreover, other factors such as candidates with experience in empirical research in sub-Saharan African settings is desirable. Applicants may also have experience and familiarity with a diverse set of health and social science datasets. The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) encourages multiculturalism thus the ability to work in a culturally diverse team is encouraged. Applicants must have demonstrated the ability to develop proposals and attract research grants which are a plus.
Value of the fellowship
The value of the postdoctoral fellowship includes but not limited to attractive, internationally-competitive fellowship package which comprises of medical cover, travel cover and life insurance cover. The centre will also provide relocation and dependents’ education cover.
How to apply for the Fellowship?
Interested Post Doc candidates can submit their application via the centre portal. The application must include the resume, cover letter; a statement of research interests and goals (1-2 pages). The resume must have contact details of three referees. All cover letters must be addressed to the Human Resources Officer of the African Population and Health Research Center, Inc.
